Chelsea news: Billy Gilmour names former Blues star he hopes to emulate

Billy Gilmour is hoping to emulate Cesc Fabregas at Chelsea, hailing the Spaniard’s range of passing and believing it is something he should try and replicate.

The 19-year-old is back in contention for Chelsea after a serious knee injury had kept him out since July, with the Scot now coming off the bench twice this season in the Premier League, while he started the 4-0 thrashing of Morecambe in the FA Cup at the weekend.

The teenager is now looking to force his way into a crowded Chelsea midfield, with Frank Lampard having numerous options in the middle of the park.

One way he hopes to do so is by emulating Fabregas’ ability to create from deep, not just maintaining possession, but creating attacks from central positions.

‘When I was watching Cesc, it was all about his forward passes to the striker, whether that was a lofted pass, a clipped ball or just a simple through ball,’ Gilmour told Chelsea’s official website.

‘He was one of the best at doing that, especially at Chelsea, and I want to add that more to my own game, but it comes first of all from being aware of what’s around you.

‘He speaks a lot about the boys because he obviously used to be here but it’s always nice seeing a top midfielder like that comment on your game.’

Fabregas has indeed had high praise for Gilmour, happy to respond to Chelsea fans on Twitter when asked about the promosiing Scot.

‘When you have the quality but also the desire, the work ethic and the intelligence, then is when you can see real potential in a young player. He has all of that,’ the Spaniard tweeted when asked of Gilmour’s talents.

‘Fantastic. Personality on the ball, intelligence in his decision making, always making angles to offer himself and has that bit of aggression in him which is very important specially in the Premier League.’

Frank Lampard has praised the skills of Gilmour as well, but also his work ethic and mental strength to return from his serious injury problem.

‘I have been delighted with him,’ Lampard told the club’s official website. ‘His attitude in rehab was what I expected but was great to see.

‘He did everything right and got himself fit and came straight back in against Krasnodar [in the Champions League] and was fantastic, and against Manchester City, a really difficult game to come into he showed personality and quality so I am really delighted to have him ready to go.

‘Billy is going to be a huge player for this club, he is young and so, like the youth in the squad I talk about a lot, we need to give him time but at the same time his talent is huge so I am really pleased with where he is at.’
