Barcelona could end their pursuit of Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum and instead hand starlet Ilaix Moriba a key role in the side next season.

Wijnaldum is in the final months of his contract on Merseyside and will be free to join another club on a free transfer club this summer.

Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman has been keen to add his fellow Dutchman to his squad since last summer with talks taking place over a move to take him to Camp Nou at the end of the current season.

Sky Sports report however that move is now on hold while new club president Joan Laporta reviews the club’s dire financial position, with the La Liga giants believed to be carrying debts in the excess of €1billion.

An alternative plan could see the club permanently promote 18-year-old midfielder Moriba to the first-team following an impressive breakthrough this term.

Moriba has been with the Catalan giants since he was seven years old, progressing through the club’s La Masia academy and is now regarded as one of the club’s brightest talents.

Mundo Deportivo recently reported several clubs across Europe are interested in prising Moriba, who is represented by super-agent Jonathan Barnett, away from the Camp Nou, reporting Manchester United have made a ‘firm offer’.

The youngster however is said to be keen to repay the faith shown in him by head coach Koeman, who has placed his trust in the club’s youngsters during a difficult season.

Laporta is also keen for the club to return to their roots and focus on developing their La Masia products into key members of the first-team.
