Arsenal have provided a positive update on the fitness of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Thomas Partey and Gabriel Martinelli in the lead-up to the side’s Boxing Day clash with Chelsea.

The Gunners have had a torrid start to the season – suffering eight defeats in their opening 14 games in the Premier League – and their injury concerns haven’t helped the situation, with Mikel Arteta under intense scrutiny ahead of a busy winter schedule.

Club captain Aubameyang has badly struggled in front of goal and the striker’s frustrations continued this month as a calf injury meant he missed Arsenal’s last two matches with Everton and Manchester City.

Summer arrival Partey has been sidelined since the north London derby with a thigh problem, while Martinelli came off with a knock in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup defeat to City at the Emirates.

On Thursday afternoon, a statement on Arsenal’s official website confirmed Partey would play no part in this weekend’s encounter.

But Aubameyang and Martinelli will be closely monitored ahead of Arsenal’s clash with Chelsea and there’s a chance both could feature versus Frank Lampard’s men.

Arsenal update on Aubameyang, Partey and Martinelli

Right calf. Sustained a slight calf strain in training last week. Auba is working hard with our medical team in order to regain full fitness as soon as possible. Has now joined outside drills and will continue to be assessed regarding availability ahead of Saturday.

Left thigh. Sustained a thigh strain during Tottenham Hotspur (a) on December 6. Thomas is currently unavailable, but is progressing well to now working outside on close ball work, together with the continued focus on his overall fitness rehabilitation.

Right shin. Sustained heavy impact and bruising to right shin during our match against Manchester City on Tuesday. Gabi is recovering well and we hope he will be able to participate in full training ahead of Saturday.

Martinelli was making just his second first-team appearance since returning from knee surgery when he was forced off against Carabao Cup holders Manchester City.

City goalkeeper Zack Steffen clattered into Martinelli and the 19-year-old Brazilian – who assisted Alexandre Lacazette’s 31st-minute header – initially tried to play through the pain.

But the youngster lasted just four minutes of the second half and was replaced by Nicolas Pepe for the remainder of Arsenal’s quarter-final defeat.

Under-fire head coach Arteta played down the severity of Martinelli’s injury after the final whistle and the teenager reassured supporters that he was ‘feeling fine and ready to go again’ on his Instagram page.

From a Chelsea perspective, Lampard is sweating over the fitness of first-choice full-backs Ben Chilwell and Reece James ahead of Saturday’s clash.

Hakim Ziyech is yet to make a full recovery from his thigh injury and will play no part in the London derby.
