Danny Murphy has hailed Eddie Nketiah as a future Arsenal ‘icon’ and says new signing Thomas Partey will be a ‘huge’ asset to the Gunners.

Nketiah, 21, is one of the most highly-rated young players in England and became the country’s all-time leading goalscorer at U21 level this week.

Murphy is a huge fan of the striker and says he ‘deserves a lot more excitement’ and can become an ‘icon’ at Arsenal like Gunners legend Ian Wright.

‘The future for Arsenal looks very bright indeed,’ Murphy told the Football Index Podcast.

‘I think Eddie Nketiah has the potential to become an icon at Arsenal, I think he’s very underrated and he deserves a lot more excitement.

‘I think he has the potential to earn a status like Ian Wright and be Arsenal’s main man for years to come.

‘I think Saka is going to be a great player for the club and I’m a big fan of Maitland-Niles too.’

Murphy also praised Arsenal’s deadline-day deal for Partey. The Ghana midfielder signed a long-term deal at the Emirates after Arsenal met his Atletico Madrid buy-out clause.

Murphy said: ‘I think Arteta’s recruitment in the summer was also hugely impressive. I think Partey will be huge and it’s an area that the club has been vulnerable in for quite some time.

‘He will provide the athleticism and tenacity in midfield that they have been missing in the middle of the pitch.

‘I’m glad Ceballos is back again on loan and he shows a lot of attacking intent with his passes.

‘Gabriel has also slotted into central defence and he looks like the real deal in the Premier League already.’

Former England midfielder Murphy added: ‘I think Arsenal made the best signing of any Premier League club this summer when they tied down Aubameyang to a new contract.

‘He has been their talisman and led by example since being handed the captaincy. I think if Arsenal finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League, it will largely be down to Aubameyang.

‘I also don’t think the likes of Partey would have joined if Aubameyang had jumped ship and everyone would have started to doubt the rebuild again.’
