Arsenal news: Alexandre Lacazette hails Mikel Arteta’s tactical change

Alexandre Lacazette believes Mikel Arteta’s tactical shift has played a huge role in his side’s return to form over the course of the last week.

Arsenal had drifted perilously close to the relegation zone following a run of seven games without a win. The Gunners lost four consecutive matches on home soil and failed to score a goal from open play in over 13 hours.

Arteta had been heavily criticised for his overly defensive tactics and his decision to switch to a 4-3-3 formation with youngsters Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe and Gabriel Martinelli operating behind a lone forward has yielded back-to-back wins over Chelsea and Brighton.

The north London club are, as a result, now focusing on pushing up the table ahead of Saturday’s match at struggling West Brom and Lacazette feels the change of focus has made life easier for the club’s attacking players.

He told RMC: ‘The coach puts me as a No.9, but more with a role to play for my team-mates and challenge a lot. It iss not really a 10’s position, nor an old-fashioned No.9 that has to stay ahead and score goals.

‘He knows my qualities and knows that I like to play short and help my team-mates with the development of play.

‘Now We’re four behind and three midfielders. It’s much easier, because before we lacked attacking players. This tactical change is also good for us.’

Lacazette started the game at Brighton on Tuesday on the bench after he sustained a slight back injury against Chelsea, but took just 21 seconds to find the back of the net after his introduction.

‘It never happened to me. After the match, I was told that I had scored after 21 seconds. I was a little surprised, but it’s true that everything went quickly,’ he added when asked about his matchwinning contribution.

‘When the team lost confidence, it was also my case. I had few situations in match, only one per game. I had to make it happen, and that’s what I didn’t do.

‘In the game, it was not exceptional either. Since then, we have regained confidence, me too with the matches of Europa League who helped me.’
